Can Customers Find Your Business Through ChatGPT?
A few years ago, a customer looking for a dentist, a restaurant or a real estate agent would open Google and scroll through the results. Today, a growing number of people simply ask an AI assistant: "Who is the best family dentist near me?" or "Which restaurant has good vegetarian options in my area?"
So the question every business owner should be asking is: when someone asks ChatGPT about my industry, does my business show up?
The honest answer is: it depends. AI assistants do not pick businesses at random, and they do not work like a paid directory. They draw on information that already exists about you online. If that information is missing, inconsistent or unclear, you will simply not be mentioned.
How AI assistants decide which businesses to recommend
Tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity answer questions in two main ways.
- From what they learned during training. This is general knowledge about well-known brands, industries and locations. Small and local businesses are rarely well represented here.
- From live web search. When a question needs current or local information, many assistants search the web in real time, read the top sources, and summarize them into one answer. This is where most local businesses have a real opportunity.
In both cases, the assistant is looking for information it can trust: clear descriptions of what you do, where you are, who you serve, and what other people say about you.
What AI looks at when it evaluates your business
While no one outside these companies knows the exact formula, the sources that consistently matter are easy to identify:
- Your website. Does it clearly explain your services, location and specialties in plain language?
- Your Google Business Profile. It is one of the most important sources of local information, including your categories, hours, services and reviews.
- Customer reviews. Both the quantity and the content of reviews help an assistant understand what you are known for.
- Third-party mentions. Directories, local listings, news articles, blogs and industry websites that mention your business add credibility.
- Consistency. Your business name, address and phone number should be identical everywhere they appear.
Seven practical steps to become visible to AI assistants
1. Make your website clear and specific
Avoid vague slogans. Instead of "We deliver excellence", write "We are a dental clinic in Istanbul offering implants, braces and teeth whitening for adults and children." AI systems quote content that is direct and easy to understand.
2. Create pages that answer real customer questions
Think about what customers actually ask before they contact you. How much does it cost? How long does it take? What should I prepare? Build service pages and FAQ sections that answer these questions honestly and in detail. This type of content is exactly what AI assistants like to cite.
3. Complete and maintain your Google Business Profile
Fill in every section: categories, services, description, photos, opening hours and contact details. Keep it updated. For local businesses, this profile is often the foundation of both Google Maps visibility and AI recommendations. (We cover this in detail in our complete Google Business Profile guide.)
4. Earn genuine reviews and respond to them
Ask satisfied customers to leave a review, and reply to each one professionally. Reviews that mention specific services or neighborhoods give both search engines and AI assistants useful context about your business.
5. Keep your business details consistent everywhere
Check that your name, address, phone number and website match across your website, social media, Google, and any directories. Small differences can create confusion about whether these are the same business.
6. Add structured data to your website
Structured data (also called schema markup) is code that labels your information for machines: your business type, address, services, opening hours and FAQs. It helps search engines and AI systems understand your content accurately.
7. Get mentioned in trusted places
Listings in reputable local directories, partnerships with other businesses, guest articles, and press mentions all strengthen your online presence. The more reliable sources describe your business consistently, the more confident an assistant becomes in recommending it.
Make sure AI crawlers can actually reach your site
Some websites unintentionally block search and AI crawlers through their settings or security tools. Ask your web developer to check your robots.txt file and security configuration, and confirm that your important pages are accessible, fast and mobile-friendly.
How to test your visibility today
You can run a simple test in a few minutes. Open ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity and ask the questions your customers would ask, for example:
- "Best [your service] in [your city]"
- "Who offers [your service] near [your neighborhood]?"
- "[Your business name] reviews"
Note whether your business appears, what the assistant says about it, and which competitors are mentioned. Repeat the test every month. Answers can change, so treat the results as a trend rather than a guarantee.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Having an outdated or unclaimed Google Business Profile
- Using different business names or phone numbers on different platforms
- Publishing thin pages with a few generic sentences
- Ignoring reviews, especially negative ones
- Assuming a nice-looking website is enough without clear, useful content
Is this relevant for every industry?
It is especially important for businesses where customers research before they choose: dental and medical clinics, real estate companies, restaurants, and other local service providers. In these sectors, people want quick, trustworthy recommendations, and that is exactly what AI assistants try to give them.
Final thoughts
No one can guarantee a place in ChatGPT's answers, and anyone who promises that should be treated with caution. What you can do is build the kind of clear, consistent and well-reviewed online presence that both Google and AI assistants trust. The good news is that the same work improves your results on Google Search and Google Maps too.
